Via ferrata: a different way to explore the mountains!

For several years now, via ferrata has been growing in popularity. To meet the demand, more and more routes have consequently sprung up in our French mountains.

Nowadays, some routes are even accessible to children as young as 7 or 8. This really helps to make this fun activity accessible to families with young children!

The reason via ferrata is so popular with adventurers of all ages is that it allows you to face your fears amidst scenery each more stunning than the last. As they make their way right up close to the rock faces, participants can also enjoy breathtaking views of the valley.

What happens during a via ferrata session?

If you’d like to book a via ferrata session, you might be wondering how it all works. First of all, you should know that you’ll be looked after by qualified instructors.

These professionals will then take the time to explain how the activity works, whilst showing you the compulsory equipment (harness, lanyards, helmet, etc.). After that, they will fit you out themselves to ensure maximum safety throughout your route.

The instructors will then take you to the starting point of your route and let you progress at your own pace. During a via ferrata, bear in mind that you’re constantly attached to a sturdy metal cable – in other words, a lifeline.

The route itself may consist of rungs, ladders, suspension bridges and much more. It’s the variety of sections that makes this activity so much fun!

What are the best via ferratas to try near Méribel?

During your stay in the mountains, you might want to book a climb at the Dent du Burgin. Best suited to experienced climbers, this dizzying via ferrata will take you to new heights, reaching an altitude of 2,700 metres!

Before tackling this giant, beginners can try their hand at the Rosière via ferrata in Courchevel. Even children can take on this aerial route because it is relatively accessible.

This in no way detracts from the charm of the activity, as the via ferrata overlooks a lovely lake with turquoise waters. The Nepalese bridge is also sure to leave the youngest visitors with wonderful memories!
