Our safety tips before setting off on a hike for a peaceful getaway

Every summer, the mountains attract large numbers of keen walkers to their nature trails and peaks.

If you’re planning to walk several kilometres in Méribel or elsewhere, it’s important to be fully aware of the key safety guidelines that apply in the mountains.

To help you enjoy a stress-free stay at altitude, we’ve put together three best practices to follow on your next hike.

Before you set off on a hike, remember to let your family and friends know

Mountain hiking is an excellent way to unwind, as it allows you to spend time in the great outdoors and discover spectacular scenery. However, this activity should not be taken lightly, as certain dangers remain very real, even for the most experienced hikers.

When out hiking, it’s important to remember that you’re never completely safe from a serious fall or a problem with your route. Furthermore, mobile coverage in the mountains isn’t always reliable.

To avoid finding yourself stuck in a difficult situation, it is advisable to contact at least one of your loved ones before setting off on your hike. Your departure time, estimated arrival time and planned route… This information is extremely important.

That way, if your contact doesn’t see you return, they can quickly call the emergency services and provide them with some useful details.

Keep an eye on the weather to avoid any nasty surprises

In the mountains, the summer weather can change rapidly throughout the day. It is therefore essential to check the forecast before setting off.

Firstly, checking the forecast on your weather app will help you decide what to wear on the day of your hike. For example, if bright sunshine is expected, you’ll need to remember to pack a cap and some sun cream.

By keeping an eye on the weather, you can also avoid hiking in the rain and the risks associated with it. A heavy downpour is particularly dangerous in the mountains as it makes uneven paths and trails slippery.

Visibility is also greatly reduced, which means you won’t be able to enjoy the surrounding scenery or see where you’re putting your feet.

Take some water and food with you for the day

If you’re planning to go hiking in the mountains for several hours, do remember to take something to eat and drink with you. The best thing to do is to pack a rucksack and fill it with one or more stainless-steel water bottles, as well as a snack and a few biscuits.

Should you experience low blood sugar, you’ll be able to top up your energy levels easily!

What’s more, it’s worth bearing in mind that a 2-hour hike can take longer or shorter depending on the hikers. If it takes you longer than expected, you’ll be glad to have everything you need with you, allowing you to enjoy your walk to the full.
