Freestyle or freeride?

Freestyle or freeride: which discipline is right for your teenager?

Published on 17/03/2025 - Written by Coline
Once they've reached a certain level on skis, it's not unusual for younger skiers to want to try something new. With freestyle or freeride, they can easily put themselves to the test and discover new ways of skiing.

Although these two disciplines are sometimes confused, in reality they require different skills and appetites. So, which of these two activities will your teenager prefer to try out this winter in Méribel?

Freestyle and freeride: adventure or creativity?

Freestyle skiing and freeride skiing differ, first and foremost, in the way they are performed. With freestyle, the skier opts for a more acrobatic style, where aerial figures and tricks are performed on specially designed modules (half-pipes, rails, big air, etc.).

In freeride, the sportsmen and women set off to conquer the untouched slopes of the area, sometimes with rocky bars on which they do a few jumps.

While both disciplines require a good grasp of skiing basics and a good sense of balance, freestyle is best suited to skiers with a creative and technical streak.

Teenagers with a penchant for acrobatic prowess will love this activity, while adventurers looking to perform in wide open spaces will thrive on freeride!

Riding techniques practised in different spaces

If the objective of the two skiing techniques differs, so does the place where they are practised. Depending on the ski resort, freestylers practice in a snowpark, or even on groomed slopes equipped with adapted modules.

This is also where freestyle competitions are held, where participants display all their skills and creativity in terms of tricks, jumps, style and sequences.

Less structured, freeride skiing is practised off-piste, on mountain slopes, far from the beaten track. It's a sport that gives skiers a real sense of freedom, with total control over their technique and their environment.

To ensure that your teenager embarks on this exhilarating sport safely, he or she needs to be properly informed about the dangers of the mountains and all their subtleties.
