Nowadays, not many people are familiar with this discipline, which originated in Norway: Telemark skiing. If you'd like to discover a different way of skiing during your stay in the Méribel ski resort, this original winter sports activity could be of interest to you.
The ESF offers you the chance to try your hand at Telemark skiing thanks to its private lessons. Accompanied by an instructor specialising in this sport, you can try out one of the oldest skiing techniques. It's a sport that might just surprise you!
Telemark skiing originated in Norway during the 19ᵉ century. More precisely, this technique was invented in 1868 by Sondre Norheim. It owes its name to the region from which it originates, the county of Telemark. The technique was given a second lease of life in the 1970s.
Today, telemark skiing competitions are still held all over the world. Telemark skiing is a very demanding discipline, but one that offers great freedom of movement.
What makes it special? The heel is released during the descent. This means that skiers can perform movements that are normally inaccessible on skis, such as genuflexion (semi-bent leg). If you're curious and used to snowboarding, Telemark could be just what you're looking for.
At ESF Méribel, we're lucky enough to be able to count on the expertise of several world telemark champions, like Philippe Lau. If you want to (re)discover one of the oldest skiing techniques in Méribel, you can learn from the best. All you have to do is book private telemark lessons with the ESF.
These lessons are available for all levels and can be booked for a half-day (morning or afternoon) or a full day, depending on your preferences. On the day of your lesson, don't forget to bring your own equipment (hire or personal).
To learn Telemark skiing, you'll need skis, boots and poles. As this is a demanding discipline, we also advise you to wear breathable clothing.
Many skiers prefer telemark skiing for its elegance and the superb feeling of freedom it gives them. In fact, this original winter sports activity has been enjoying a certain revival in France recently. At the ESF Méribel, telemark skiing isn't the only amazing sport you can discover with professional instructors.
If you want to take advantage of your stay in Méribel to try something new, you could also take the time to book a biathlon or Nordic skiing course, or even a snowshoeing outing. Alone, with family or friends, you'll be able to try out other ways of exploring the snow-covered slopes and trails of the Méribel ski area. You'll leave with lots of great memories!
