What you don't know about telemark skiing: elegance, technicality and unique sensations

Published on 11/02/2026 - Written by Coline
Telemark skiing is a unique discipline that combines technique, physical strength and grace, and is the ancestor of a number of popular disciplines such as downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and even freestyle skiing. Telemark skiing is characterised by its original position - free heels and bent knees - and guarantees an unrivalled feeling of freedom once you've mastered the technique. esf Méribel offers all levels of winter sports enthusiasts the chance to discover the joys of telemark skiing for one or more private lessons.

Telemark skiing, discover the authentic spirit of skiing

Originating in the telemark province of Norway in the 19ᵉ century, this sliding activity is thought to have been the brainchild of a skier by the name of Sondre Norheim. He was looking for a quick way down the steep slope from his chalet to the nearest village and across the surrounding plains.

The originality of this activity lies in the manufacture of a wicker binding that allows only the front of the foot to be attached to the ski, leaving the heel free. The result? Sondre was able to make turns for the first time in the history of modern skiing.

The unique technique of the jump turn was born and spread rapidly as Sondre dominated the competition. However, with the emergence of Alpine skiing, telemark skiing faded into the background until it finally came back into use in the 1980s.

From free heels to genuflections, this elegant, original and demanding discipline has become a real passion for many skiers from all horizons, particularly in competition.
