Instructors' equipment: what they really use (and why)

Published on 19/02/2026 - Written by Nadège
On the slopes of Méribel, esf instructors lead by example. During their ski lessons and beyond, they are often the first to know how to equip themselves for a good time at altitude.

Ski or snowboard equipment, off-piste safety accessories, clothing adapted to the day's weather... These mountain regulars don't forget a thing! To do what they do, we've put together all the essentials you need to have to hand during your holiday in the 3 Vallées. Check out our checklist!

Ski and snowboard equipment: the essentials

Not surprisingly, the esf Méribel instructors take to the slopes with their own skis, poles and boots. This allows them to follow and guide their pupils, whatever the ski lesson on the programme. With their own equipment, they also give live demonstrations, teaching you how to use your equipment properly if necessary.

Snowboarding is much the same, except that they swap skis and poles for a board. Apart from that, they almost always wear a helmet and ski mask, to protect themselves and set an example.

For your part, it's important to hire or buy all this equipment if you want to take part in the esf courses, as it won't be provided by the school's instructors.

Off-piste safety: accessories not to forget

If you're planning to go off-piste in Méribel (ski touring, etc.), don't forget to pay close attention to your safety, as the dangers are greater off the marked runs. You can never be too confident in this area.

Esf instructors always carry three items as a precaution: an avalanche transceiver, more commonly known as DVA, a probe and a shovel. In the event of a problem, these instruments make it easier to locate and rescue people buried under the snow.

When you take off-piste skiing lessons in Méribel, you'll be given safety equipment by your Esf guide at the start of the session. So there's no need to hire it beforehand, as we'll take care of everything!

Comfort on the slopes: the ideal mountain outfit

Skis adapted to your level, height and weight, adjusted bindings, a ski helmet complying with standard NF EN 1077, an index 4 goggle... With all this, you'll be able to enjoy your favourite winter sports activity in the best possible conditions.

When it comes to ski or snowboard clothing, esf instructors obviously wear their famous red and white overalls, personalised with the name of the school and fitted with emergency reflectors, as well as thermal underwear and a fleece.

They also have gloves or mittens, ski socks and a choker (optional). Finally, they always take with them a tube of SPF 50+ sun cream and a high-protection lip care product, which they reapply several times during the day, because UV rays are more dangerous in the mountains. It's up to you!
