Cross-country skiing, an activity with multiple benefits

Originating in Norway, cross-country skiing was originally used to make progress over snow more easily. Although it proved to be very useful for hunting and exploring, it gradually established itself as a winter sport in its own right.

Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is practised on a moderate slope and at low speed. So it's an ideal introduction for adults and children who want to discover the joys of gentle gliding, while getting their cardio and muscles working.

In fact, cross-country skiing is one of the best endurance sports that doesn't traumatise the joints. Arms, legs, glutes, back... the whole body is put to work: ideal for toning up, but also for improving the coordination of even the youngest skiers.

Good for your morale, a cross-country skiing session is also the perfect way to get away from it all for a while.

Cross-country skiing: classic or skating?

Cross-country skiing comes in two distinct styles, making it enjoyable for skiers of all abilities.

The classic - or alternating - style is practised on rails in which skiers progressively advance with their skis parallel to each other. Although the skier glides over the snow, the alternating step is similar to walking. This makes the classic technique easier to learn for beginners and advanced skiers alike.

In skating, you progress over packed snow in skating steps. This means that the skis are no longer positioned parallel to each other, but in a movement similar to that of ice skating. As the practice requires better coordination and balance, it remains more demanding. Once you've mastered the basics, however, you're guaranteed to get an unrivalled thrill out of the glide!
