Taking your first steps on skis is an unforgettable moment, for children and parents alike. That's why it's normal for certain concerns and questions to arise as the initiation approaches.

Organisation, procedure, choice of equipment... There are so many things to consider to ensure that your young athlete's first experience of skiing goes perfectly. We've put together some top tips to help you and your child get ready for this new winter sports activity in Méribel!

How can you manage your child's apprehension?

The first day at ski school is an important stage for your budding athlete. Diving into this new environment can be stressful for them, even if they are motivated and impatient.

To manage this potential apprehension and prepare your child for this new experience, we recommend that you take the time to explain how a lesson will be run, whether you opt for a private or group lesson.

Give them details of the types of activities on offer, how long a lesson lasts and what equipment they will need to wear. Don't hesitate to show them pictures of the resort and the place where they'll be making their first runs, so that they can project themselves into the future.

New sensations, time with friends, fun activities... Talk to them about the fun side of the discipline to reassure them before they take the plunge.

Make sure you have the right equipment and clothing

Another essential for a ski lesson is your child's clothing. Between the ski equipment and the thermal and breathable clothing, you need to offer your child comfort and protection.

As well as ski boots, which are available to hire, and a helmet, which is essential for your little skier's safety, you'll need to invest in clothing that's warm and breathable enough to give them maximum freedom of movement:

  • Thermal underwear ;
  • Waterproof clothing (overalls, trousers, jacket, etc.);
  • Anti-UV goggles or helmet;
  • Mittens for toddlers or gloves for older children;
  • Scarf or choker.

As well as protection from the cold, children also need to protect themselves from the sun's rays. So don't forget sun cream for a trouble-free first ski lesson, whatever your child's age!

Gain confidence while having fun with a qualified instructor

Once there, it's time to hand over the reins to the ski instructor. Méribel has been awarded the Famille Plus label, and offers lessons perfectly tailored to the needs and preferences of toddlers - in the nursery, mini-club or Piou-Piou club - and children aged 5 to 13.

They will benefit from tailor-made support provided by our specialist teams, trained in working with the very young. The instructors will be able to build their children's confidence and help them to progress at their own pace.

Your budding skier will be in safe hands after his or her first lesson, so you can set off with peace of mind to enjoy your favourite activities in the resort!
