Arnaud, 38 seasons serving skiers

Arnaud, 38 seasons at the service of skiers

In February 1988, at Méribel Mottaret, Arnaud took his first steps at the ESF (French Ski School).

Thirty-eight seasons later, he is still one of the 380 instructors at the ESF, and we felt it was impossible not to introduce you to this Belgian native, who contributes so much to the life of our school and embodies our passion for skiing and the art of teaching. Portrait of an enthusiastic instructor!

From a childhood crush to 38 seasons in Méribel

Born in Belgium, Arnaud discovered skiing at a very early age and quickly became convinced that he wanted to live in the mountains and spend his life on skis. From an early age, he focused all his holidays and winters on training courses, with a single goal in mind: to reach the level needed to train as a ski instructor in France.

In February 1988, he finally settled in Méribel-Mottaret and joined the ESF: the start of an adventure that has lasted for 38 seasons. After a few years teaching at Club Med, he chose Méribel to make a permanent home for himself in a valley that never ceases to amaze him, one that is pleasant to live in all year round and ideal for his job and family life.

After graduating in 1989, he followed a classic career path: from young trainee to young instructor, he then built up his skills and experience, both on the slopes and in customer relations. For Arnaud, it's not just a question of being a good skier and a good teacher, but also of enjoying the friendly contact with customers. Explaining, animating, sometimes adding a touch of humour, accompanying apprentice skiers also means listening to them and simply being with them.

Instructor, guide and teacher in the heart of the 3 Valleys

Arnaud likes to point out that an instructor isn't just someone who teaches or perfects technique: he's also a guide who accompanies skiers throughout the 3 Vallées. His days are divided between private lessons for adults, family lessons over several generations and outings to discover the resort, sometimes with a touch of off-piste when conditions allow.

His pleasure: building made-to-measure itineraries, choosing the right snow, but also avoiding what he calls the "motorways", the main slopes that are often too busy, in favour of quieter slopes where the snow is of better quality and where everyone can ski with confidence.

With families, he deals with everyone's expectations: children who want to play on the moguls, teenagers looking for thrills, parents and grandparents who need safety and comfort. He does a lot of observing, adjusting the choice of slopes and colours according to each person's level and making sure that everyone can have fun.

He also enjoys working with groups of beginners: starting with a hesitant snowplough, seeing the pupil 'click' and then feeling their pride at the end of the week is a real reward for him. This sense of step-by-step progress is fully in line with the ESF Méribel philosophy: progress at your own pace, without rushing things, surrounded by professionals who know the terrain like the back of their hand.

Learn at your own pace and in safety with the ESF Méribel

In almost four decades on skis, Arnaud has seen equipment, techniques and holidaymakers' expectations evolve. One thing remains constant: to make the most of the ski area, you need to feel safe and accompanied.

This is precisely what the ESF Méribel offers with its group lessons for children and adults, private lessons, day outings and discovery outings in the 3 Vallées. Each formula allows the content of the lesson to be tailored to the level and desires of the skier: learning the basics, perfecting carving, managing speed or exploring new slopes.

Arnaud loves those moments when a student who has been stuck up until now is freed up in one morning, starts to control his speed and, finally, starts to enjoy himself. For him, skiing should remain a pleasure, and that's where the ESF plays a key role: creating a reassuring, structured environment where you can make progress without putting yourself at risk. Whether it's your first time on skis or you want to make the most of the area's potential, the ESF instructors are there to guide you.

With passionate professionals like Arnaud, who have the job in their blood and a real desire to pass on their knowledge, booking a lesson at the ESF Méribel is more than just a simple lesson: it's a chance to experience the mountains intensely, in complete serenity.

Never one to get bored of skiing, Arnaud is looking ahead to the coming seasons with the same desire: to make a living from his passion and share it with others. In the future, he might even travel to Hokkaido in Japan or the Canadian Rockies to discover new terrain, always on skis of course. But for the time being, it's in Méribel that he continues to embody his passion, with the conviction that passing on his skills is just as important as performing them.
