Travelling at altitude with your baby is perfectly possible! However, especially if your child is under a year old, it's advisable to take a few precautions. The mountains are a demanding environment, particularly in winter. The altitude and changing weather conditions can put the youngest children to a severe test.

So, if your baby is no more than 12 months old and not used to heights, it is advisable to choose destinations with a maximum height of 1,500 metres, then 1,700 metres up to 15 months and 2,000 metres from the age of 2. These levels will make it easier for your child to acclimatise to changes in atmospheric pressure, as their respiratory system is not yet fully developed.

Whatever their age, remember to take breaks during your journey: eating, drinking or breast-feeding will help your baby to relieve the pressure and cope better with the climb to higher altitudes.

More than adults, toddlers are particularly sensitive to the low temperatures in the mountains in winter, especially if they are not yet old enough to walk. So you'll need to dress your baby warmly, especially protecting the most fragile areas such as the extremities.

So take along a hat, mittens, socks, warm ski suit(s) and insulating underwear such as a bodysuit, tights or fleece.

Although it's cold, the sun's rays are also powerful in the mountains. So don't skimp on sun protection for your young child. Sunglasses or goggles, sun cream, lip balm and a good moisturiser will be an integral part of your kit.
